- We co-hosted (with the Law of Intellectual Property student group) a very successful fundraising party a few weeks ago. Over a hundred people attended!
- New class/section reps were elected. The new additions to SELF leadership are all very enthusiastic and qualified, and we're happy to have them aboard.
- We are making great progress in our goal to get a sports & entertainment law class introduced into the curriculum! We have been working on a proposal to create a short "J-term" class (a weeklong class held in January before the second semester starts) to be offered this year and it is making its way through the process as we speak. The class will be about how to "brand" artists and athletes and will be taught by the incredibly qualified Paul Loving, Sports Marketing Counsel for adidas America.
- The second SELF Sports and Entertainment Law Conference is starting to take shape! Panel concepts have been nailed down and invites are headed out soon. This will consume the majority of SELF's resources over the next few months but it should be decidedly worth it.
- And last, but definitely not least, SELF and APALSA (Asian Pacific America Law Student Ass'n) are proud to announce that new Portland Trail Blazers GM Rich Cho will be coming to Oregon Law to speak! Details to follow. Amazingly, October might top September yet.
The Sports and Entertainment Law Forum (SELF) is a group that offers Oregon Law students a way to get involved in the world of sports and entertainment law. The group works closely with members of the local and regional sports and entertainment communities to host a variety of speakers and workshops geared towards expanding student understanding of dynamics and issues unique to those industries.

The Start of a Momentous Year for SELF
We have officially finished the first week of the fall term here at the University of Oregon School of Law, and it has been a great week for SELF. We had an information table up at 1L Orientation and had an amazing 68 students sign up for our e-mail list! [Mind you, that's out of a class of only about 180 students.] A lot of the new students seemed very interested in sports and entertainment law; if not having already seriously thought about it as a career path, than at least in learning more about it because of prior interests in sports and entertainment, generally.
Of course, signing up for an e-mail list is great, but it doesn't guarantee much of anything beyond receiving e-mails. So, we weren't quite sure what to expect when we had our first informational meeting this last Thursday, but we were hopeful that some of our new signees would follow through and attend. Well, amazingly, about 70 students showed up! Not wanting to jump the gun, again, we figured that perhaps the attendance was inflated due to serving complimentary pizza. In fact, we knew that it was inflated somewhat--the question was just, how much? So, after giving a rundown on the ins and outs of SELF and what students can get out of being involved, we gave them an opportunity to sign up for task groups focused on certain aspects of our agenda for the coming year. Roughly 45 students are offering to help us this year! This bodes well for our planned sports and entertainment law conference, as well as a number of other initiatives we have on the table.
Stay tuned as we hope to be back with more updates along the way about the conference, fundraisers, speakers and other events!

Greetings from SELF!
Welcome to the blog for the Sports and Entertainment Law Forum (S.E.L.F.), a student organization at the University of Oregon School of Law. We are a group of students interested all things related to sports and entertainment law - negotiations, contracts, intellectual property, mediation, arbitration, antitrust, labor law, torts, tax, and on and on!
Our goal is to increase the exposure and relevance of sports and entertainment law here at Oregon through bringing in guest legal speakers, providing forums for sports and entertainment news and discussions, organizing an annual sports and entertainment law conference, and lobbying the administration and faculty for course offerings pertaining to sports and entertainment law. We have an ambitious agenda for the 2010-'11 school year and we'll be sure to post updates here as the year progresses.
Follow our blog for news, information, and musings about S.E.L.F., Oregon Law School, and sports and entertainment law in general!
